Svartsengi (Reykjanes peninsula, SW Iceland): The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) reported that by 23 September around 10 million cubic meters of magma had accumulated beneath Svartsengi since the last eruption within the Reykjanes volcanic system ended on 5 August. Data showed that magma was accumulating at around 4 km depth. The rate of magma accumulation was steady; model calculations based on deformation measurements indicated that by 27 September the volume may reach 11 million cubic meters, a volume that in some previous cases was followed by eruptions.
Since the likelihood of an eruption had increased, IMO raised the Volcanic Alert Level System (VAL) to 2 (on a scale of 0-3) on 25 September and concurrently a risk assessment map of the area was also updated.

An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 occurred only 3 minutes ago 27 miles north of Anchorage, Alaska, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 20 miles beneath the epicenter near Anchorage, Alaska, USA, early morning on Thursday, October 9th, 2025, at 1:24 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.8.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Houston (pop. 2,200) located 2 miles from the epicenter, Big Lake (pop. 3,400) 7 miles away, Meadow Lakes (pop. 7,600) 9 miles away, Knik-Fairview (pop. 14,900) 11 miles away, Wasilla (pop. 9,300) 14 miles away, Tanaina (pop. 8,200) 14 miles away, Lakes (pop. 8,400) 18 miles away, Eagle River (pop. 24,800) 22 miles away, Eagle River (pop. 24,800) 22 miles away, and Anchorage (pop. 291,200) 27 miles away.

If you felt it, report it through
