Small earthquake of magnitude 2.9 just reported 35 miles southwest of Tennant Creek, Northern Territory, Australia

A magnitude 2.9 earthquake near Tennant Creek, Barkly, Northern Territory, Australia, was reported only 28 minutes ago by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Australia. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles beneath the epicenter early morning on Saturday, September 6th, 2025, at 5:53 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.9 as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 2.9.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Tennant Creek (pop. 3,200, 35 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

In-Person Disaster Centers to Change Hours Starting Sept. 8

SANTA FE, New Mexico – Hours are changing for two in-person centers supporting New Mexicans affected by severe storms, flooding and landslides that occurred June 23 – Aug. 5.

Starting Monday, Sept. 8, the hours for in-person assistance in Doña Ana County and Lincoln County will change. No appointment is needed. Assistance is available in both English and Spanish.

FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) staff are providing in-person assistance at the centers to help residents apply for federal assistance, including grants from FEMA and low-interest SBA Disaster Loans. SBA’s Business Recovery Center is also located at the ENMU Ruidoso Annex. FEMA staff can help individuals in other ways including checking the status of existing applications and informing residents about additional resources available.
