Japan was shaken near Ishinomaki, Ishinomaki Shi, Miyagi, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 7 minutes ago, Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 57.90 km beneath the epicenter near Ishinomaki, Ishinomaki Shi, Miyagi, Japan, late at night on Wednesday, October 1st, 2025, at 11:50 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Rikuzen-Takata (pop. 18,300) located 47 km from the epicenter, Ofunato (pop. 35,500) 49 km away, Ishinomaki (pop. 138,500) 67 km away, Tome (pop. 77,900) 73 km away, Ichinoseki (pop. 114,500) 79 km away, Kurihara (pop. 66,600) 87 km away, Osaki (pop. 128,800) 89 km away, Furukawa (pop. 76,300) 91 km away, and Sendai (pop. 1,096,700) 109 km away.
