The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 2.9 quake in Australia near Muswellbrook, New South Wales, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Sunday, September 28th, 2025, at 12:07 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Muswellbrook (pop. 12,100) located 5 miles from the epicenter, Denman (pop. 1,800) 12 miles away, and Aberdeen (pop. 2,000) 12 miles away. In Scone (pop. 5,600, 20 miles away), Singleton Heights (pop. 4,600, 22 miles away), Singleton (pop. 5,100, 23 miles away), and Cessnock (pop. 15,100, 44 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
