An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred 30 minutes ago 16 km southwest of Sulmona, Italy, Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 17.60 km beneath the epicenter near Sulmona, Province of L’Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy, late at night on Wednesday, August 6th, 2025, at 11:56 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well. A third agency, The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.5.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Scanno (pop. 1,900) located 6 km from the epicenter, and Sulmona (pop. 21,100) 16 km away. In Sora (pop. 23,800, 29 km away), Avezzano (pop. 37,800, 34 km away), Cassino (pop. 21,100, 49 km away), Chieti (pop. 44,400, 55 km away), L’Aquila (pop. 33,700, 58 km away), Lanciano (pop. 34,800, 58 km away), and Pescara (pop. 119,600, 67 km away), the quake was probably not felt.

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake near Neiafu, Vava’u, Tonga, was reported only 16 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Thursday, August 7th, 2025, at 11:08 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.0, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Fangale’ounga (pop. 2,000) located 90 km from the epicenter, Pangai (pop. 1,700) 96 km away, and Neiafu (pop. 4,300) 97 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news
