An intermediate magnitude 5.3 earthquake was reported in the morning near Huatacondo, Provincia del Tamarugal, Tarapacá, Chile.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Saturday, December 13th, 2025, at 9:18 am local time at an intermediate depth of 114. km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Huatacondo (pop. 55) located 19 km from the epicenter, Pica (pop. 9,300) 64 km away, Pozo Almonte (pop. 16,900) 109 km away, and Alto Hospicio (pop. 142,100) 130 km away.
