The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.9 quake in the United States near Ukiah, Mendocino County, California, only 6 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Thursday, August 14th, 2025, at 5:48 am local time at a shallow depth of 9.1 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Laytonville (pop. 1,200) located 2 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Brooktrails (pop. 3,200) located 16 miles from the epicenter, Covelo (pop. 1,300) 16 miles away, Willits (pop. 4,900) 19 miles away, Fort Bragg (pop. 7,300) 22 miles away, Redwood Valley (pop. 1,700) 32 miles away, Redway (pop. 1,200) 36 miles away, and Ukiah (pop. 15,900) 39 miles away.
