An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred only 27 minutes ago 62 km northwest of Nuku’alofa, Tonga, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 35. km beneath the epicenter near Nuku’alofa, Kolofo’ou, Tongatapu, Tonga, early morning on Monday, August 11th, 2025, at 5:36 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Houma (pop. 2,100) located 61 km from the epicenter, Nuku’alofa (pop. 22,400) 62 km away, Haveluloto (pop. 3,400) 63 km away, Vaini (pop. 3,000) 68 km away, Kolonga (pop. 1,100) 69 km away, Lapaha (pop. 8,000) 70 km away, Tatakamotonga (pop. 3,000) 70 km away, and `Ohonua (pop. 1,200) 94 km away.

The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Kirkagac (pop. 27,100) located 41 km from the epicenter, Soma (pop. 65,900) 43 km away, and Akhisar (pop. 84,700) 44 km away.
