A shallow magnitude 3.6 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Simi Valley, Ventura County, California, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Saturday, December 13th, 2025, at 5:03 pm local time at a shallow depth of 6.9 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.6 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Fillmore (pop. 15,500) located 8 miles from the epicenter, and Santa Paula (pop. 30,500) 9 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Moorpark (pop. 36,100) located 16 miles
