A magnitude 4.3 earthquake near Bando, Bandō Shi, Ibaraki, Japan, was reported only 9 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 50. km beneath the epicenter in the evening on Friday, September 5th, 2025, at 9:00 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.3.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bando (pop. 57,100) located 4 km from the epicenter, Iwai (pop. 42,500) 6 km away, Joso (pop. 60,800) 9 km away, Koga (pop. 139,300) 19 km away, Tsukuba (pop. 241,700) 20 km away, Tsukuba (pop. 175,600) 21 km away, Chikusei (pop. 100,800) 25 km away, Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 49 km away, Mito (pop. 270,700) 57 km away, and Yokohama (pop. 3,761,600) 78
