A shallow magnitude 3.6 earthquake was reported in the morning near Kodiak, Kodiak Island, Alaska, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Wednesday, October 29th, 2025, at 11:12 am local time at a shallow depth of 18 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.6 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Old Harbor (pop. 220) located 15 miles from the epicenter, Larsen Bay (pop. 88) 20 miles away, and Akhiok (pop. 72) 33 miles away. In Karluk (pop. 37, 35 miles away), Womens Bay (pop. 720, 43 miles away), Port Lions (pop. 200, 47 miles away), Kodiak Station (pop. 1,300, 49 miles away), and Kodiak (pop. 6,300, 56 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
