A moderately shallow magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported early morning near Irakleion, Heraklion, Crete, Greece.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Thursday, November 27th, 2025, at 2:08 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 46. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 4.7, and The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bali (pop. 450) located 13 km from the epicenter, Panormos (pop. 1,200) 16 km away, Perama (pop. 1,700) 20 km away, Anogeia (pop. 2,500) 27 km away, Gazi (pop. 12,600) 33 km away, Rethymno (pop. 32,500) 35 km away, Irakleion (pop. 137,200)
