Just 7 minutes ago, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Ternate, Kota Ternate, North Maluku, Indonesia. The tremor was recorded around noon on Thursday, November 20th, 2025, at 1:19 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 103. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Galela (pop. 8,800) located 50 km from the epicenter, Tobelo (pop. 34,200) 69 km away, Ternate (pop. 204,900) 89 km away, Sofifi (pop. 36,200) 97 km away, and Sofifi (pop. 36,200) 97 km away.

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near San Vito, Coto Brus, Provincia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica, was reported only 8 minutes ago by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 9. km beneath the epicenter in the evening on Wednesday, November 19th, 2025, at 9:49 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in San Vito (pop. 4,000) located 4 km from the epicenter.
In Corredor (pop. 7,100) located 24 km from the epicenter, and Golfito (pop. 6,800) 30 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
