An intermediate magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported in the evening near Kos, Dodecanese, South Aegean, Greece.
According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Wednesday, August 13th, 2025, at 8:39 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 109.70 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 4.4, The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 4.5, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.5.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nikia (pop. 48) located 39 km from the epicenter, Kefalos (pop. 2,500) 51 km away, Antimacheia (pop. 2,300) 60 km away, Pyli (pop. 2,400) 65 km away, Kalymnos (pop. 12,300) 74 km away, Kos (pop.
