Just 5 minutes ago, a 2.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Gap, Hautes-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur, France. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Sunday, November 2nd, 2025, at 5:45 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 5. km below the surface.
The event was filed by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.0 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sainte-Marie (pop. 40) located 2 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Guillestre (pop. 2,400) located 10 km from the epicenter, Embrun (pop. 7,100) 17 km away, Jausiers (pop. 1000) 18 km away, and Barcelonnette (pop. 3,500) 21 km away. In Briancon (pop. 11,600, 36 km away), Villeneuve (pop. 3,400, 43 km away), and Gap (pop. 42,700, 49 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
