A shallow magnitude 3.8 earthquake was reported in the evening near San Jose del Cabo, Los Cabos, Estado de Baja California Sur, Mexico.
According to the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, the quake hit on Monday, September 1st, 2025, at 9:59 pm local time at a shallow depth of 17.80 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in El Ejido (pop. 16) located 3 km from the epicenter, San Jose del Cabo (pop. 69,800) 4 km away, La Playa (pop. 1,400) 7 km away, and Las Veredas (pop. 10,500) 11 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Las Palmas (pop. 11,600) located 25 km from the epicenter, Colonia del Sol (pop. 48,000) 25 km away, Cabo San Lucas (pop. 68,500) 25 km away,
