In-brief analysis

August 18, 2025

In our latest Short-Term Energy Outlook, we forecast U.S. working natural gas inventories will reach 3,872 billion cubic feet (Bcf) by the end of October, or 2% more than the previous five-year average for that time of year. Natural gas inventories grew quickly in late April through early June, with seven consecutive weeks of net injections to inventories exceeding 100 Bcf each for the first time since 2014.

U.S. natural gas production outpaced natural gas consumption during the start of the 2025 injection season. The injection season generally runs from April through October, when injections into storage are typically greater than withdrawals. The latest data from our Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report show total natural gas inventory was 7% above the five-year (2020–24) average as of August 8, compared with the start

The project aims to define and implement circular decommissioning strategies focused on the most common FPSO platforms in Brazil. Different circular approaches will be identified and evaluated to maximize value opportunities within the internal cycle. A Virtual Decommissioning System will be developed, integrated with a Digital Twin of the FPSO platform, including a full inventory of facilities, equipment, and all technical and operational aspects.

The postdoctoral research focuses on developing an offshore circularity index and conducting environmental and social life cycle assessments (LCA) of FPSO platforms, particularly the FPSO Espírito Santo, which will serve as a pilot project for circular decommissioning. The study will be based on the FPSO inventory (Work Package WP3), covering topside, subsea, and reverse logistics. LCA will be performed using widely adopted tools like SimaPro. This research will also support other project work packages, including the development of a gamified

The CO₂ content is very high in the pre-salt natural gas (NG) reserves in Brazil, reaching values close to 60% in molar fraction. Offshore CO₂ separation is highly attractive for oil companies, as it facilitates CO₂ injection into the sea, reducing the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. The most common devices for CO₂ separation, such as amine units and membrane modules, are more suitable for lower CO₂ percentages than those typically found in NG extracted from pre-salt reserves. Furthermore, the size of these devices increases with the amount of CO₂ removed, thus occupying a large area of the platform deck. Having a robust system that can be installed subsea, with low complexity and little need for maintenance, is of great interest to the oil and gas industry in Brazil, as it promotes CO₂ capture and facilitates CH₄ utilization.

The researcher will
