Monthly wind generation in the first nine months of 2026 was an average of 68% higher compared with the same period in 2025 in ISO New England (ISO-NE):

Monthly generation from wind was highest in September of this year at 668.9 gigawatthours (GWh), more than double generation levels from September 2025 and nearly 10% higher than this year’s previous high in March. Increased wind generation is the result of growing capacity additions in the ISO-NE region. Regional wind capacity increased 47% so far in 2026 to 2.5 gigawatts, following a 12% increase in capacity in 2025. Daily wind generation peaked on October 6, 2026, at about 47.3 GWh, 1% higher than the previous peak that occurred on September 10, 2026. Total wind generation for the first nine months of 2026 was 4,619

We expect energy expenditures this winter to vary because of diverging trends in energy prices among fuels and regional variation in forecast temperatures. We expect that lower prices for natural gas and propane will drive decreases in expenditures this year for the half of U.S. households heating with those fuels. Higher prices for electricity and heating oil drive increased expenditures for households heating with those fuels in our forecast.

Although we expect national average temperatures to be similar to last winter, our forecast assumes warmer temperatures in the Northeast, following a relatively cold winter last year, and much colder temperatures in the West, following an unusually warm winter last year. Temperatures in the Midwest and South are similar to last year.

Note: 3Q26=third quarter of 2026

Petroleum markets in the third quarter of 2026 (3Q26) were characterized by increasing prices for crude oil and petroleum products amid persistent conflict in the Middle East.

Crude oil prices

Crude oil prices steadily climbed in 3Q26 as markets adjusted to renewed military strikes in the Middle East. The front-month futures price of a barrel of Brent crude oil began the quarter at $72 per barrel (b) on July 1, the lowest since February 26, two days before the start of the war. The low prices at the start of the quarter reflected increased flows through the Strait of Hormuz in June following the June 17 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Following the resumption of military strikes on July 7, crude
