An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 occurred just 8 minutes ago, 27 km north of Catania, Italy, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake struck at a very shallow depth of 7.30 km beneath the epicenter near Catania, Province of Catania, Sicily, Italy, on the morning of Wednesday, October 21st, 2026, at 8:49 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as a light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Milo (pop. 620), located 7 km from the epicenter; Giarre (pop. 24,100), 12 km away; Acireale (pop. 49,500), 18 km away; Mascalucia (pop. 32,200), 18 km away; Adrano (pop. 34,400), 20 km away; Paterno (pop. 46,000), 22 km away; Misterbianco (pop. 45,500), 24 km away; and Catania (pop. 311,600), 27 km away.
