Small magnitude 2.8 quake hits 9 km southeast of Calais, France, in the morning

France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) reported a magnitude 2.8 quake in France near Calais, Pas-de-Calais, Hauts-de-France, only 6 minutes ago. The earthquake hit on Tuesday morning, September 29, 2026, at 8:44 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which also listed the quake at magnitude 2.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Les Attaques (pop. 1,900), located 2 km from the epicenter, and Calais (pop. 74,400), 9 km away. In Grande-Synthe (pop. 23,200, 26 km away), Saint-Omer (pop. 18,300, 28 km away), Saint-Pol-sur-Mer (pop. 23,600, 29 km away), Dunkerque (pop. 71,300, 32 km away), Boulogne-sur-Mer (pop. 47,000, 32 km away), and Coudekerque-Branche (pop. 25,200, 33 km away), the quake was probably not felt.

Etna (Sicily, Italy): Explosive activity continues. The Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Toulouse warned of a volcanic ash plume rising to an estimated 14000 ft (4300 m), or flight level 140, and moving at 25 kts in S direction.
