A very shallow magnitude 2.5 earthquake was reported in the morning near Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, California, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Friday, July 4th, 2025, at 11:16 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.5 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.6.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Contra Costa Centre (pop. 5,400) located 1 miles from the epicenter, Walnut Creek (pop. 68,900) 1 mile away, Pleasant Hill (pop. 34,800) 2 miles away, Lafayette (pop. 25,800) 4 miles away, Concord (pop. 128,700) 4 miles away, and Martinez (pop. 38,100) 7 miles away. In San Ramon (pop. 76,100, 11 miles away), Berkeley (pop. 121,000, 11 miles away), and San Francisco (pop. 864,800,

Japan was shaken near Iwaki, Iwaki-shi, Fukushima, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 only 12 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 13. km beneath the epicenter near Iwaki, Iwaki-shi, Fukushima, Japan, early morning on Saturday, July 5th, 2025, at 3:14 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.2, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might
