An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred only 8 minutes ago 78 km south of Gorontalo, Indonesia, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 115. km beneath the epicenter near Gorontalo, Kota Gorontalo, Indonesia, early morning on Friday, August 1st, 2025, at 6:13 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Gorontalo (pop. 198,500) located 78 km from the epicenter, and Luwuk (pop. 47,800) 96 km away.
