Worldwide earthquakes above magnitude 3 during the past 24 hours on 22 Aug 2025

Summary: 1 quake 7.0+, 8 quakes 5.0+, 46 quakes 4.0+, 137 quakes 3.0+, 362 quakes 2.0+ (554 total)
A powerful magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the Drake Passage—between South America and Antarctica—early today, triggering a tsunami alert for parts of Chile’s coastline. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned of possible waves within three hours, and authorities remain on alert (Economic Times).
Meanwhile, aggregated data show a particularly active seismic day, with at least one quake above M7, around five above M5, and dozens more in the moderate range. According to our monitoring system, more than 1,800 earthquakes were detected in the past 24 hours, underscoring the global scale of seismic activity.
Other noteworthy tremors included a M5.3 near Mawlaik, Myanmar, and several magnitude-5 events in the South Shetland Islands region. While these quakes drew scientific attention, no major damage or casualties have been reported.
Despite the high numbers, today’s seismic activity was otherwise geographically dispersed and largely non-impactful—save for the Drake Passage and tsunami advisory, which remains the most significant event of the day.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 6.3 quake in Vanuatu near Port Vila, Shefa Province, only 16 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Friday, August 22nd, 2025, at 11:53 pm local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 275.80 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.6, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency at magnitude 5.4, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Port Vila (pop. 35,900) located 43 km from the epicenter.
