The National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported a magnitude 2.7 quake in Greece near Argostoli, Kefallonia, Ionian Islands, 36 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Saturday, July 12th, 2025, at 11:06 am local time at a shallow depth of 15.90 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.7 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 2.6, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 2.6, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 2.7.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Davgata (pop. 62) located 2 km from the epicenter, Faraklata (pop. 1,100) 2 km away, Argostoli (pop. 9,800) 3 km away, Lixouri (pop. 3,800) 5 km away, and Valsamata (pop. 1000) 8 km away. In Sami (pop. 1,300, 14 km away), Poros (pop. 1,100, 24 km away), Ithaki (pop. 1,800, 26 km away), and Zakynthos (pop. 11,500, 59 km away), the quake was probably not felt.

An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred early morning on Saturday, July 12th, 2025, at 1:31 am local time near Soledad, Monterey County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 7.3 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.7.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Soledad (pop. 25,000) located 16 miles from the epicenter, Greenfield (pop. 17,200) 18 miles away, Hollister (pop. 37,500) 28 miles away, Salinas (pop. 157,400) 33 miles away, Los Banos (pop. 37,500) 38 miles away, Gilroy (pop. 53,200) 42 miles away, and Seaside (pop. 33,000) 43 miles away.

A moderately shallow magnitude 5.4 earthquake was reported early evening near Ust’-Kamchatsk Staryy, Ust-Kamchatsky District, Kamchatka, Russia.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Saturday, July 12th, 2025, at 6:50 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 35. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.1, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.2.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ust’-Kamchatsk Staryy (pop. 4,900) located 105 km from the epicenter.
