A moderately shallow magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Hastings, Hastings District, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand.
According to New Zealand’s Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), the quake hit on Wednesday, August 13th, 2025, at 5:53 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 30.40 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Otane (pop. 520) located 19 km from the epicenter, Havelock North (pop. 14,900) 20 km away, Hastings (pop. 90,600) 23 km away, Haumoana (pop. 1,200) 28 km away, Clive (pop. 2,500) 30 km away, Onekawa (pop. 6,600) 38 km away, Napier (pop. 66,700) 39 km away, and Bay View (pop. 2,200) 47 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include
