An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred 12 minutes ago, 80 km northeast of Wamena, Indonesia, according to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency.
The quake struck at an intermediate depth of 88. km beneath the epicenter near Wamena, Jayawijaya Regency, Highland Papua, Indonesia, early Wednesday morning, October 7th, 2026, at 6:56 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which also listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Elelim (pop. 5,900), located 12 km from the epicenter; Kobakma (pop. 13,100), 61 km away; and Wamena (pop. 41,800), 80 km away.
