Malaysia was shaken near Lahad Datu, Sabah, by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake only 22 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake struck at a shallow depth of 15 km beneath the epicenter near Lahad Datu, Sabah, Malaysia, on Tuesday evening, October 6, 2026, at 9:11 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.1, the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency at magnitude 5.0, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibrations in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Larap (pop. 4,100), located 60
