Strong southerly winds around 20 to 25 mph with gusts 30 to 40 mph are expected today. Occasional localized gusts up to 45 mph are possible. These strong winds may blow around loose objects. If you’re driving a high profile vehicle, be sure to slow down, especially in open and elevated areas where winds may be stronger. A combination of the strong winds, well above normal temperatures, and dry fuels will result in elevated fire weather conditions this afternoon across southern and central Minnesota. These conditions could lead to the rapid spread of fires. Check burning restrictions and fire danger before burning.

A combination of unseasonably warm temperatures, southerly winds gusting 25 to 35 mph, low humidity, and dry cropland will lead to elevated fire danger today. Any fires that ignite, especially in cropland, will spread quickly and could become difficult to control. Therefore, outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and care should be taken to prevent the start of accidental fires when smoking or operating vehicles and farm equipment around dry vegetation or crops. In addition to the fire risk, motorists should be alert for visibility reductions near farmland as gusty winds could cause dust from harvesting activities to get lofted.
