A magnitude 3.3 earthquake occurred on the morning of Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 10:01 am local time near Traralgon, Latrobe (Vic.), Victoria, Australia, according to the RaspberryShake citizen-seismograph network.
According to preliminary data, the quake occurred at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibrations in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Woodside (pop. 350), located 3 miles from the epicenter, and Yarram (pop. 2,100), 8 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Rosedale (pop. 1,600), located 25 miles from the epicenter. In Churchill (pop. 4,700, 26 miles away), Traralgon (pop. 26,900, 27 miles away), Longford (pop. 1,400, 28 miles away), Morwell (pop. 13,600, 30 miles away), and Sale (pop. 14,300, 31 miles away), the quake was
