An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred 10 minutes ago, 49 km southeast of Luzern, Switzerland, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake struck at a very shallow depth of 5.30 km beneath the epicenter near Luzern, Lucerne-Stadt District, Kanton Luzern, Switzerland, early on Sunday morning, October 18th, 2026, at 4:37 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Military Applications Division – Earth and Environmental Science (CEA), which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibrations in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Muotathal (pop. 3,500), located 14 km from the epicenter; Glarus (pop. 12,400), 18 km away; Altdorf (pop. 9,400), 21 km away; Schwyz (pop. 15,200), 23 km away; Einsiedeln (pop. 15,900), 27 km away; Rapperswil (pop. 34,800), 36 km away; Luzern (pop. 81,700), 49 km away; Vaduz (pop. 5,200), 52 km away; and Zurich (pop. 415,400), 58 km away.
