An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred early on Monday morning, October 5th, 2026, at 2:31 am local time near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake occurred at a shallow depth of 18 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed the quake at magnitude 3.9.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Volcano (pop. 2,600), located 7 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Fern Forest (pop. 1,200), located 13 miles from the epicenter; Mountain View (pop. 3,900), 19 miles away; Hawaiian Acres (pop. 2,700), 21 miles away; Ainaloa (pop. 3,000), 23 miles away; Orchidlands Estates (pop. 2,800), 23 miles away; Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400), 27 miles away; Hawaiian Beaches (pop. 4,300), 28 miles away; and Hilo (pop. 43,300), 29 miles away.
