An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred just 22 minutes ago, 111 km northeast of Palermo, Italy, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Palermo, Province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy, in the early afternoon on Friday, October 23rd, 2026, at 3:55 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which also listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which reported a magnitude of 4.6; the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which reported a magnitude of 5.2; and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which reported a magnitude of 5.2.
Generally, quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency, and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing greater accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibrations in

Just 9 minutes ago, a magnitude-3.1 earthquake struck near Bastia, Upper Corsica, Corsica, France. The tremor was recorded in the early afternoon on Friday, October 23rd, 2026, at 3:56 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 5. km below the surface.
The event was reported by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which also listed the quake at magnitude 3.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Piedigriggio (pop. 140), located 3 km from the epicenter, Morosaglia (pop. 1,100), 13 km away, and Corte (pop. 7,200), 17 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lucciana (pop. 3,700), located 24 km from the epicenter, Borgo (pop. 5,500), 25 km away, Biguglia (pop. 5,600), 29 km away, and Furiani (pop. 4,300), 31 km away. In Calvi (pop. 5,500, 34 km away) and Bastia (pop. 41,000, 37 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
