The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Japan near Ishigaki, Ishigaki-shi, Okinawa, only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake struck late at night on Monday, October 5th, 2026, at 10:30 pm local time, at an intermediate to considerable depth of 156. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the earthquake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same earthquake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), at magnitude 5.0, and the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, at magnitude 5.0.
Generally, earthquakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency, and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that arrive after the first one often showing greater accuracy.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Yonakuni (pop. 1,700), located 74 km from the epicenter; Shirahama (pop. 3,900), 89 km away; and Ishigaki (pop. 47,600), 116 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if they change and follow up if other significant news about the earthquake becomes available. If you’re in the area, please
