A very shallow magnitude 2.7 earthquake was reported early in the morning near Fontana, San Bernardino County, California, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake struck on Thursday, October 8th, 2026, at 1:09 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 3.6 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which also listed the quake at magnitude 2.7.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Fontana (pop. 212,700), located 3 miles from the epicenter.
