A shallow magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported late at night near Sarmi, Sarmi Regency, Provinsi Papua, Indonesia.
According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake struck on Thursday, October 1st, 2026, at 10:31 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 19 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which also listed the quake at magnitude 4.6. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but it was probably felt by many people as light vibrations in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sarmi (pop. 14,100), located 33 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if they change and follow up if other significant news about the quake becomes available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting
