An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred just 22 minutes ago, 25 miles northwest of Fort Stockton, Texas, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake struck at a very shallow depth of 1.2 miles beneath the epicenter near Fort Stockton, Pecos County, Texas, USA, around noon on Wednesday, October 7th, 2026, at 12:17 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed the quake at magnitude 3.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibrations in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Coyanosa (pop. 160), located 7 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Fort Stockton (pop. 8,600), located 25 miles from the epicenter; Pecos (pop. 9,500), 27 miles away; and Monahans (pop. 7,700), 33 miles away. In Wink (pop. 1,100, 40 miles away) and Kermit (pop. 6,400,
