France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) reported a magnitude 2.8 quake in France near Royan, Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, only 13 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Thursday, September 18th, 2025, at 2:37 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 6.93 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 2.8 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.8.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Breuillet (pop. 2,300) located 2 km from the epicenter, Saint-Palais-sur-Mer (pop. 3,700) 5 km away, Vaux-sur-Mer (pop. 3,700) 5 km away, Royan (pop. 19,000) 7 km away, La Tremblade (pop. 5,000) 11 km away, and Saint-Georges-de-Didonne (pop. 5,400) 11 km away. In Rochefort (pop. 29,400, 30 km away), and Saintes (pop. 29,500, 35 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
