A magnitude 2.9 earthquake near Thornton, Adams County, Colorado, USA, was reported 31 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5.1 miles beneath the epicenter early morning on Friday, June 13th, 2025, at 6:08 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.9 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.9.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Dacono (pop. 4,800) located 3 miles from the epicenter, Erie (pop. 21,400) 5 miles away, Brighton (pop. 37,600) 8 miles away, Broomfield (pop. 65,100) 11 miles away, Thornton (pop. 133,500) 12 miles away, and Longmont (pop. 92,100) 12 miles away. In Westminster (pop. 116,300, 14 miles away), Boulder (pop. 107,300, 17 miles away), Denver (pop. 715,500, 21 miles away), and Aurora (pop. 359,400, 22 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
