An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred only 4 minutes ago 85 km northeast of Iquique, Chile, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 103. km beneath the epicenter near Iquique, Provincia de Iquique, Tarapacá, Chile, late at night on Sunday, May 25th, 2025, at 11:50 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Pachica (pop. 170) located 27 km from the epicenter, Huara (pop. 2,700) 42 km away, and Camina (pop. 1,300) 42 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pozo Almonte (pop. 15,700) located 69 km from the epicenter, La Tirana (pop. 1,500) 75 km away, Iquique (pop. 191,500) 85 km away, Alto Hospicio (pop. 108,400) 87 km away, and Pica (pop. 9,300) 96 km away.
