A magnitude 5.4 earthquake near San Fernando, La Union, Ilocos, Philippines, was reported only 11 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter early morning on Friday, September 19th, 2025, at 3:52 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, which listed it as a magnitude 5.8 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.3, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in San Fernando (pop. 83,000) located 19 km from the epicenter.
In Bauang (pop. 17,100) located 28 km from the epicenter, Tagudin (pop. 35,800) 31 km away, Santa Maria (pop. 28,000) 32 km away, and Aringay (pop. 29,800) 43 km away, the

A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported in the evening near Montbeliard, Doubs, Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, France.
According to France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), the quake hit on Thursday, September 18th, 2025, at 9:54 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10.58 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Herimoncourt (pop. 4,100) located 13 km from the epicenter, Audincourt (pop. 15,600) 18 km away, Montbeliard (pop. 28,900) 23 km away, and Delemont (pop. 11,300) 27 km away. In Biel/Bienne (pop. 48,600, 31 km away), Belfort (pop. 54,600, 34 km away), Mulhouse (pop. 111,400, 52 km away), and Bern (pop. 121,600, 57 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
