Papua New Guinea was shaken near Wewak, Wewak District, East Sepik Province, by a magnitude 6.2 earthquake just 6 minutes ago, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake struck at an intermediate depth of 102. km beneath the epicenter near Wewak, Wewak District, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, on the evening of Sunday, October 25th, 2026, at 8:30 pm local time. The earthquake’s strength may have been tempered by its relatively great depth below the surface, making it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the epicentral area. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Angoram (pop. 1,600), located 65 km from the epicenter; Ambunti (pop. 2,100), 81 km away; and Wewak (pop. 18,200), 86 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if they change and follow up if other significant news about the quake becomes available. If you’re in the area,
