Just 5 minutes ago, a 3.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. The tremor was recorded around noon on Saturday, December 20th, 2025, at 12:28 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 5. km below the surface.
The event was filed by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mazerolles (pop. 810) located 2 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lescar (pop. 9,700) located 15 km from the epicenter, Lons (pop. 13,900) 17 km away, Billere (pop. 14,900) 19 km away, Pau (pop. 82,700) 19 km away, and Mont-de-Marsan (pop. 36,200) 47 km away.
