A magnitude 4.6 earthquake near Surigao, Surigao del Norte, Caraga, Philippines, was reported only 23 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter around noon on Saturday, December 20th, 2025, at 1:52 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) at magnitude 4.3, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Santa Monica (pop. 2,300) located 23 km from the epicenter, San Benito (pop. 2,300) 30 km away, Pilar (pop. 2,400) 39 km away, Libas (pop. 3,400) 39 km away, Del Carmen, Surigao
