A magnitude 6.1 earthquake near Arawa, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, was reported only 8 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies monitoring seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 60. km beneath the epicenter early Monday morning, October 12th, 2026, at 1:07 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which also listed the quake at magnitude 6.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Buin (pop. 750), located 33 km from the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Taro (pop. 1,100), located 83 km from the epicenter; Panguna (pop. 2,900), 85 km away; Arawa (pop. 40,300), 92 km away; and Kieta (pop. 3,600), 93 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if these change and follow
