An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred just 7 minutes ago, 66 km northwest of Lipari, Italy, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Lipari, Province of Messina, Sicily, Italy, on Friday afternoon, October 23rd, 2026, at 5:32 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which also listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as a light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pecorini A Mare (pop. 100), located 37 km from the epicenter; Pianoconte (pop. 1,100), 64 km away; Canneto (pop. 2,100), 64 km away; Lipari (pop. 4,300), 66 km away; Brolo (pop. 4,900), 88 km away; Gioiosa Marea (pop. 3,200), 89 km away; San Giorgio (pop. 1,900), 91 km away; and Milazzo (pop. 31,800), 103 km away.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred just 22 minutes ago, 111 km northeast of Palermo, Italy, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Palermo, Province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy, in the early afternoon on Friday, October 23rd, 2026, at 3:55 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which also listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which reported a magnitude of 4.6; the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which reported a magnitude of 5.2; and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which reported a magnitude of 5.2.
Generally, quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency, and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing greater accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibrations in
