France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) reported a magnitude 2.9 earthquake in France near Clermont-Ferrand, Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, only 3 minutes ago. The earthquake struck on the morning of Thursday, October 22nd, 2026, at 7:26 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibrations in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Saint-Amant-Roche-Savine (pop. 630), located 3 km from the epicenter; Cunlhat (pop. 1,400), 6 km away; and Ambert (pop. 7,900), 12 km away. In Issoire (pop. 16,000, 28 km away), Cournon-d’Auvergne (pop. 18,800, 35 km away), Cournon-d’Auvergne (pop. 18,800, 36 km away), Montbrison (pop. 16,200, 36 km away), Clermont-Ferrand (pop. 147,900, 45 km away), and Chamalieres (pop. 20,300, 46 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
