An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred only 11 minutes ago 69 km south of Poso, Indonesia, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 14. km beneath the epicenter near Poso, Kabupaten Poso, Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia, in the evening on Monday, July 14th, 2025, at 8:52 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.8, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Poso (pop. 47,500) located 69 km from the epicenter, Masamba (pop. 38,000) 72 km away, and Palopo (pop. 190,900) 122 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake
