Peru was shaken near Tingo Maria, Leoncio Prado Province, Region de Huanuco, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 only 18 minutes ago, The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 100. km beneath the epicenter near Tingo Maria, Leoncio Prado Province, Region de Huanuco, Peru, early afternoon on Monday, September 22nd, 2025, at 3:48 pm local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 2.3 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pucayacu (pop. 780) located 29 km from the epicenter, Tingo Maria (pop. 53,200) 65 km away, San Alejandro (pop. 3,600) 72 km away, Uchiza (pop. 17,700) 73 km away, and Tocache (pop. 29,000) 94 km away.
