The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 2.5 quake in Spain near Valencia, 35 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Wednesday, August 27th, 2025, at 4:04 am local time at a very shallow depth of 7.50 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Montserrat (pop. 7,600) located 3 km from the epicenter, Picassent (pop. 19,800) 10 km away, and Torrent (pop. 78,500) 11 km away. In Alaquas (pop. 30,400, 13 km away), Aldaia (pop. 29,900, 14 km away), Manises (pop. 30,500, 15 km away), Mislata (pop. 43,800, 17 km away), Paterna (pop. 64,000, 18 km away), and Valencia (pop. 792,500, 20 km away), the quake was probably not felt.

Position Description

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering, along with our interdisciplinary research team comprising experts in Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Neuroscience, and Computer Science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), invites applications for a Ph.D. student position, starting in Spring or Fall 2025. The successful candidate will engage in cutting-edge research utilizing electroencephalography (EEG), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and/or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technologies to explore neuroergonomics and neuroenvironmental design applications in architecture and construction. This position is particularly suitable for candidates with a background in biomedical engineering, neuroscience, or civil/architectural engineering interested in applying their expertise to improve human interactions with built environments.

Key Research Areas

Neuroergonomics: Optimizing work environments and systems through understanding brain and behavior interactions.

Neuroenvironmental Design: Examining the impact of various architectural design and environments (e.g., temperature)

An earthquake of magnitude 3.5 occurred in the morning on Wednesday, August 27th, 2025, at 10:34 am local time near Kingscote, Kangaroo Island, South Australia, Australia, as reported by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.5 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Seddon (pop. 99) located 5 miles from the epicenter, and Cassini (pop. 78) 9 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Newland (pop. 50) located 10 miles from the epicenter, Stokes Bay (pop. 54) 10 miles away, Vivonne Bay (pop. 72) 15 miles away, Wisanger (pop.
