The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Chile near San Antonio, San Antonio Province, Region de Valparaiso, only 7 minutes ago. The earthquake struck in the early afternoon on Monday, October 12th, 2026, at 3:17 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 19 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the earthquake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the National Seismological Center (Centro Sismológico Nacional, CSN) of the University of Chile, which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, reported the same earthquake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the earthquake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Antonio (pop. 87,700), located 21 km from the epicenter; Cartagena (pop. 18,000), 25 km away; Melipilla (pop. 63,100), 48 km away; Valparaiso (pop. 282,400), 81 km away; Valparaiso (pop. 282,400), 81 km away; Vina del Mar (pop. 334,200), 83 km away;
